The discussion has been framed as a choice between preserving everything and starting again from scratch. Neither position adequately reflects the uneven quality of the existing material. Some sections remain useful, while others need more than superficial editing. My preference is for selective reconstruction guided by an explicit assessment of each section. This is not simply a compromise halfway between the two proposals. It follows a different principle: the scale of revision should match the nature of the problem.
