Practical examples

When reducing a report to one page, the easiest material to remove is not always the least important. A short condition may govern the entire recommendation, while a lengthy example may merely illustrate a point already established. The editor should ask what a reader might reasonably conclude if each proposed deletion were made. If removing a qualification turns a limited finding into a general claim, the cut is too costly. Space can instead be recovered through tighter examples, fewer repetitions and clearer structure. Editing for brevity succeeds when the reader receives less wording without receiving a different argument.
